- Hi Rodney:
-
- The Cardinal 14.4 voice/fax modem was a bag of problems for me. It would
- always hang up 10 seconds after a voice message started. It took several
- attempts, the last one I waited 20 minutes long distance for tech support,
- and he told me to download the software update via BBS (long distance) and
- that took 20 minutes. Lost the connection once and had to retry also. The
- new software improved things, now it would record 20-40 seconds before hanging
- up.
-
- On local connection to an internet host, it would hang up frequently, and with
- lots of other students calling in also, it wasn't easy to get back on line.
-
- Calling there BBS for tech info was almost impossible. either them or my modem
- kept hanging up. You can E-mail them, but message turn around time is 3 - 4
- days! And from the answers I got, I could tell it was going to take a year to
- complete the communication about this.
-
- Now, the printer problem. Eventually I figured it out:
- With windows freshly reinstalled from MicroSoft disks, and the HP deskjet 500
- printer driver installed, the printer would work great. Install Faxworks, the
- printer would print crap. Faxworks replaces \windows\system\unidrv.dll with
- it's own version. Restore the old unidrv.dll and the printer works. I tried
- this on two different systems, a 386 with AMI bios and a 486 with Award bios,
- and it was the same. Another fellow suggested downloading a printer driver
- update from HP, and I did, but I learned that it replaces the unidrv.dll also,
- plus put megabyte of other stuff on my harddrive in the system directory (I
- hate it when vendor software does this).
-
- Also, after reinstalling the Plag and Play stuff, it would no longer find my
- modem, and the next step was to download the non-plug and play info from their
- BBS.
-
- At this point, I reminised about the simpler days and decided that I had spent
- enough time and to buy another modem. (I bought an Archtek 14.4, and it seems
- to work rock-solid so far).
-
- I liked the software-user interface of the Faxworks better than that of
- BitWare (Archtek), and the voice quality of the Rockwell chip set is better
- than the Cirrus of the Archtek, but at least it works. I will wait until
- Cardial grows up a little bit and I hear that their product stabalizes before
- trying again.
-
- Cardinal's newest software update for that modem is FW_087. If you don't have
- it, try it, it might work for you. Otherwise just send E-mail, and ask for an
- appointment where they will call YOU at a time you decide. Would you tell me
- the date of the unidrv.dll that FaxWorks left in your system directory? I'm
- still curious about how it is that your printer works.
